Kericho is at a defining moment in its urban development. As the population grows and economic activity continues to increase, the existing town is facing increasing pressure on land, roads, housing, businesses and public services. The current town has become increasingly congested, making it necessary to identify new areas for planned expansion.
One of the areas that could play a major role in the future growth of Kericho is Chelimo New Town.
If properly implemented, the expansion could contribute significantly to Kericho’s long-term ambition of achieving city status within the next two decades, supported by population growth, infrastructure, investment and improved public services.
Among the proposed amenities are:
- Referral Hospital – A major health facility serving Kericho and neighbouring communities.
- State House – A proposed government facility that could increase the area’s strategic importance.
- ESP Market – A modern market designed to support traders and stimulate local commerce.
- Kenya Power Offices – Modern offices to support electricity-related services in the region.
- Pharmaceutical Factory – An industrial facility with potential to support manufacturing and employment.
- One of Kenya’s Largest Bus Stages – A major transport hub connecting Kericho with other towns and regions.
- Stadium – A modern sporting and recreational facility for residents and visitors.
- Expanded Modern Town – A planned urban expansion stretching from the Brook area towards Kapsuser.
- Police Station – Improved security infrastructure for the growing population.
- Chelimo–Kerenga Airstrip Road – Improved connectivity between the new town and Kerenga Airstrip.
- Governor’s Residence – A proposed official residence within the expanded urban area.
- Deputy Governor’s Residence – A proposed official residence supporting the county administration.
- Primary School – Educational infrastructure to serve families living in the new development.
- Colleges – Higher and technical education facilities to support skills development and employment.
- Economic Zones – Designated areas for businesses, industries and investment.

The opportunity is to develop it as a planned modern urban centre with proper zoning, efficient road networks, drainage, water supply, sewerage, public transport, housing and green spaces.
A well-planned town can also attract investors by providing suitable areas for businesses, manufacturing, technology, education and other economic activities.
The proposed economic zones could be particularly important in creating employment opportunities for young people while broadening Kericho’s economy beyond its traditional sectors.
