Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has condemned the mysterious death of young blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody shortly after his arrest. Ojwang was apprehended from his rural home in Homa Bay County and later booked at the Central Police Station in Nairobi. His arrest stemmed from allegations of publishing false information about Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat. The circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s sudden death have sparked public outrage, with leaders like Sudi demanding justice.
In a statement released on Monday, June 9, Sudi expressed shock and grief over the incident, calling it a devastating moment for Ojwang’s family and the nation. “As a parent, the news of Albert Ojwang’s death has left me speechless. I can’t imagine the pain his family is going through now,” he stated. Sudi offered his condolences and prayers to the bereaved family, emphasizing the need for strength and support during this difficult time.
The outspoken UDA lawmaker used the moment to affirm that President William Ruto’s administration does not support extrajudicial killings. Sudi noted that the Kenya Kwanza government has made significant progress in dismantling such practices since taking office in 2022. However, he hinted at rogue elements within the system who may be sabotaging those efforts and working to damage the government’s image.
Sudi called on security agencies to act swiftly and bring those responsible to justice. “This administration vowed to end mysterious killings and has made great steps, but it seems there are a few weak links taking us back,” he said. As questions mount around police conduct and human rights in Kenya, the call for thorough investigations into Ojwang’s death continues to gain momentum. The incident has reignited debate on the safety of digital content creators and the state of press freedom in Kenya.
