In a vibrant celebration of heritage and progress, Homa Bay County etched its name in history as the proud host of Kenya’s 62nd Madaraka Day. Held at the newly renovated Raila Odinga Stadium, the festivities were themed around “Harnessing the Blue Economy for Sustainable Growth,” spotlighting the lakeside region’s maritime potential. The occasion marked the first time the county hosted the national event, drawing thousands of Kenyans in a spirited show of unity and patriotism.
By dawn, crowds had already packed the 20,000-seater stadium, waving flags and dancing to traditional Luo music. The colorful pageantry set the stage for a high-profile ceremony attended by President William Ruto, First Lady Rachel Ruto, Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar (the day’s chief guest), and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. In a rare moment of political unity, President Ruto, Raila, and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki shared a spontaneous dance to a patriotic song, creating a powerful image of togetherness.

The Blue Economy theme was brought to life with a symbolic fish-frying demonstration at the new Homa Bay Modern Fish Market. President Ruto and Raila joined Governor Gladys Wanga in showcasing the county’s fishing industry, with the facility expected to support over 400 traders. The gesture highlighted the potential of aquatic resources in driving economic transformation for lakefront communities.
Infrastructure development was another key highlight. The president commissioned several major projects, including the revamped Kabunde Airstrip, the new county government headquarters, and the Homa Bay Pier. Governor Wanga described the celebrations as a “devolution blessing,” citing increased business for hotels and vendors as proof that national events can uplift local economies.
As the sun set on a successful day filled with culture, development, and dialogue, Homa Bay emerged not only as a symbol of unity but also as a cornerstone in Kenya’s journey towards harnessing its Blue Economy. The county’s moment in the national spotlight affirmed that with proper investment and inclusion, every region can contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s future.
