Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has come out guns blazing, describing his impeachment as nothing short of a political conspiracy. Appearing before the Senate, Mutai accused Kericho County Assembly of engineering his ouster, claiming that Speaker Patrick Mutai has been using the impeachment process as a shortcut to the governor’s seat. The governor insisted that the drama unfolding in Kericho was not about accountability, but a deliberate plan fueled by greed and political ambition.
In his defense, Governor Mutai painted a picture of betrayal within his own backyard. He told senators that what Kericho residents are witnessing is a “well-orchestrated political conspiracy” designed to push him out, not because of wrongdoing, but to serve the political expediency of individuals eager to capture power. He stressed that the county speaker’s interest in succeeding him as governor is the driving force behind the entire impeachment motion.
The accusations leveled against Mutai include abuse of office, mismanagement of funds, and responsibility for the alleged loss of over Sh9 million intended for victims of the Londiani road tragedy. However, the governor dismissed the claims as baseless, explaining that he had no role in forming the committees that managed the funeral arrangements. According to Mutai, the responsibility rested with the county secretary and the county commissioner, not his office.
Furthermore, Governor Mutai reminded the Senate that the matter of the Londiani funds had already been settled in court, which ruled that no money had been lost. With that, he urged senators to deliver justice not just for him, but also for the people of Kericho who, he argued, are being dragged into an unnecessary political war. As the impeachment battle rages on, Kericho remains on edge, with the fate of its leadership hanging in the balance.
